1. If it is music you make, your tracks should be available for
digital downloads; whether its for free or for a certain amount of money.
Though it may be wise to give your music away for free while you are still
unknown and upcoming.
We do exactly at Frequent Xpressionz. We will assist you
with distributing your music. Share with us your track or link.
2. Ask for feedback and listen to what people say. It could be criticism or suggestions, they are equally helpful in assisting you build a brand that people want to invest in. Do not brush off criticism as hate; listen.
3. Promote, promote, promote. Make posters with your brand to
display and place them at malls. It’s free! All you gotta do is get an official
stamp from the officials and you get free advertising for a whole week. Make
sure your posters have all your contact details.
4. Send your music to radio. Look out for helpful blogs and fan
pages. Exhibition houses will also want to display your brand if it is good.
5. Do as many gigs as you can. Jump at opportunities like free
gigs. Find events where much established artists will be showing. Ask to
perform for free.
6. Collaborate with other hungry artists. This reminds me of
when Qibho Intalektual started out. He would never turn down an invite to be
featured on a track. You would bump into this guy in the street and ask him to
do a verse on your track and he wouldn’t refuse. He would do it for free!! Look
at where it got him.
7. Get a good look. Seriously clean up. Get a good dress sense.
Pull up your pants a bit when going to business meetings. Touch up your brand
logo and overall presentation. You will be taken seriously.
8. Go to interviews. TV has slots where free promotions are let
through. Visit radio DJs during their shifts. Ask for an interview. Drop a copy of your CD;
and probably leave one or two more for lucky listeners to win.
9. Always have your material with you. You don’t want to get
off stage and have an eager fan pull out a few Emalangeni to purchase your
product and you have no CD ! Carry your product, business card etc. Why do you think
artists carry their backpacks around like a bunch of hippies? Those are
offices!
10. Hoard the social media. This one never gets old. Make
Facebook, Twitter, Reverbnation, Soundcloud accounts.
